I had heard from plenty of people that the nation is harmful, particularly now with the influx of vacationers along with the Mayan doomsday prediction before coming in Guatemala. I told them I was very interested in organizing a media trip, and contacted INGUAT, the Guatemalan tourism board. I never asked myself”Is Guatemala harmful?”
In a nutshell
I was more than excited, but my emotions of happiness soon turned into,”what have I gotten myself into?” I had read about with gang members out of backpackers, so I was apprehensive about my coming trip. My family also didn’t help to qualm my concerns- they were also upset I had determined to do the trip despite hazards.
I was also invited by the El Salvadorian tourism board into their nation, soon after I arranged Guatemala. I believed it would be best to kill 2 birds with one stone (no pun intended) while I was in Central America. I flew out of Miami and took the leap of faith a few months ago. After landing, I immediately understood that what I learned and ruminated around for months was erroneous.
Guatemala town, like any town, has dangerous roads and its neighborhoods. But I can tell you with complete certainty that it is safe after seeing much of this and a historical place to see. Factors do must be taken- don’t walk around at night alone and always listen to your gut (along with your manual or driver in case you’ve got one.)
Worrying is almost inevitable, like traveling into some other town with a bad-rap. However, being smart and aware is half of the battle in staying safe and making certain that your trip is one you’ll never overlook. My main concern was my gear. I journey with cameras that are expensive that are different which I did not need to go stolen. I threw on a backpack to conceal my things instead and then nixed my customary belt clips. It functioned perfectly and I had zero attention to my own cameras.
About has been so far from the truth. The folks are warm and friendly. The streets are buzzing with folks on their errands. Like any other town on Earth, Guatemala City has its highs and lows. Play it smart, so don’t flash camera, your opinion or any other expensive item you’re traveling with, and most probably be polite. One thing in life I have discovered is that if you don’t take risks, you will seldom get pay-offs. Traveling via Guatemala has been one of my favourite excursions thus far and I would recommend you visit, but always with a manual. In addition, I suggest reading important travel advisories before heading anywhere. To answer the questions”Is Guatemala harmful?” I would say not more harmful than any other nation, you need to use common sense.
Particular thanks to the Guatemala Toursim Organization.
